Yes — you can rent from Atlas without your own auto insurance policy. You still need liability coverage, but it doesn't have to be yours: renter liability through Atlas is $33 per day, added at checkout. If you do have your own policy and we can verify it, you pay nothing extra.
Here's how each situation works, and what it costs.
If you already have auto insurance
Most personal policies extend to rental vehicles. Under Florida's primary-insurance rule (Fla. Stat. § 627.7263), a renter's own liability and personal-injury protection are primary up to the state minimums — so your policy applies first, and ours sits behind it.
You complete a short verification during booking. Once it clears, there is nothing more to buy. A damage waiver remains optional.
If you don't have auto insurance
You can still rent. Florida requires every vehicle on the road to carry minimum liability coverage — $10,000 personal injury protection and $10,000 property damage (Fla. Stat. §§ 627.736 and 324.021). If you can't verify your own policy, Atlas provides renter liability coverage for the rental period at $33 per day, which satisfies that requirement.
You don't need to arrange anything before booking. It's selected during checkout.
What about credit card coverage?
Some cards include rental benefits, but coverage varies more than people expect. Many cover damage to the rental vehicle only and exclude liability entirely — which is the part Florida requires.
Before relying on a card, check with the issuer:
- Whether liability is covered, or only damage to the vehicle
- Whether Florida rentals are included
- Coverage limits and deductibles
- Whether it's primary or secondary to your own policy
Credit card damage coverage doesn't remove the need for liability coverage.
Should you add a damage waiver?
A damage waiver is separate from liability. It limits what you owe if our vehicle is damaged, and it's always optional:
- Standard — $14.95 per day, $1,000 deductible
- Premium — $24.95 per day, $250 deductible
A waiver is not insurance. If your own policy or card already covers damage to a rental, you may not need one. If you'd rather cap your exposure, the Premium plan leaves you responsible for $250 rather than the full repair.
What you'll need to book
- A valid driver's license — drivers must be at least 23
- A payment method in the renter's name
- Your insurance details, if you're using your own
- Identity verification, completed online
- A $300.00 security deposit — a hold, not a charge, released after you return the car
