Port Everglades Car Rental: What to Know Before or After Your Cruise

Your ship clears at 7AM. Your flight is at 6PM. That gap is a day in South Florida, not a day in a departure hall.

A rental car is the straightforward way to use it, and the same goes for the day or two before you sail. Port Everglades sits 1.8 miles from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International, which is why cruise and car go together here better than almost anywhere else.

But there's a wrinkle most cruise guides skip, and it's ours rather than the port's. So let's start there.

We open at 8am, and close at 2pm on weekends

Port Everglades says passengers typically debark between 7 and 9AM. We're open seven days a week, but not around the clock:

Monday to Friday — 8:00am to 6:00pm
Saturday and Sunday — 8:00am to 2:00pm

Book online whenever you like. A car still has to change hands inside those windows.

Three things follow from that.

An early walk-off can't beat 8am. First down the gangway at 7:15 still means a handover at 8:00 at the earliest.

Weekend turnarounds are tight at both ends. Most Port Everglades ships turn around on a weekend, which is exactly when we close at 2pm. A Sunday pickup has a six-hour window — and so does a Sunday return. If you're picturing a full beach day before an evening flight, the car has to be back by 2pm.

Anything needing a person waits for the next window. A verification that didn't clear automatically, or an unusual license, doesn't get sorted at 6am on a Sunday.

None of that is a reason not to rent. It's a reason to pick your handover time on purpose, rather than assuming the ship's arrival time is when your rental starts.

How it works

Book before you sail, and finish verification while you're still on land.
Choose a handover time that allows for debarkation — not the ship's docking time.
Get to the car: delivery to your hotel, or our pickup point near FLL.
Use the day.
Return with enough margin for the shuttle and your airline's cutoffs.

There's no counter to queue at and no paperwork on the day. Booking, identity, license, insurance and payment all happen online beforehand, which is the entire reason step 1 matters.

Why the gap is worth filling

Cruise schedules produce a shape no other trip does: you're turned out of your accommodation at breakfast time and your flight isn't for another nine hours.

Port Everglades' own advice is to extend the stay and see Greater Fort Lauderdale. A car is the flexible way to do it — you pick the itinerary, and your bags come along.

It works at the front end too. Arrive a day or two early and you can spend the afternoon on Fort Lauderdale Beach, drive A1A, have dinner on Las Olas, replace whatever you forgot to pack, or see family before boarding — instead of orbiting your hotel.

1.8 miles, and why that isn't the whole story

The port lists FLL at 1.8 miles. It's genuinely close.

It is not, however, a five-minute door-to-door trip. Between the ship and the car you still have the shore-leave announcement, leaving the vessel, collecting luggage, the terminal process, port traffic, security checkpoints, and finding your transportation. The port recommends allowing time for the whole transfer rather than trusting the mileage.

Plan on the process, not the distance. This is the single most common way a cruise-day rental goes sideways.

Don't leave a rental in the port garage

Port Everglades has over 5,500 spaces across two garages and three surface lots, and currently posts a $20 daily maximum for a standard vehicle, $25 oversized. No reservations, no pre-payment — you pull a ticket on arrival. Check the port's current rates before you sail.

That's a fine deal for your own car. For a rental it's a bad one, because you pay twice: the daily rate on a car sitting motionless in a garage, plus the parking on top of it, for every day you're at sea.

Unless you need the vehicle the moment you step off the ship, return it before you board. Rent again afterwards.

Your luggage is coming with you

This is the part people don't see coming.

Port Everglades notes that airlines at FLL may only be able to check your bags up to two hours before your scheduled flight. Leave the ship at 8AM with a 7PM flight and you cannot simply drop the bags at the terminal and walk away for the day.

So the luggage is with you either way. The only question is whether it's in a trunk or on your shoulder.

Normal precautions apply, and they're worth stating because a car full of cruise luggage is a conspicuous thing:

Bags in the trunk or covered cargo area, out of sight.
Passports, wallets, electronics and medication stay with you.
Don't leave shopping bags visible in the passenger compartment.

A rental car is convenient for luggage. It is not a secure storage locker, and it shouldn't be treated as one.

What actually fits in the time you have

Count from the handover, not from the ship's arrival.

Three to four hours. Breakfast or lunch nearby, Las Olas Boulevard, a short waterfront drive, shopping near the airport. Don't attempt anything ambitious when you still have to fuel the car, return it, wait for a shuttle and check in.

Five to seven hours. Fort Lauderdale Beach, Hollywood Beach, Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, lunch along the Intracoastal. Our guide to the best beaches you can drive to will help you pick.

Most of the day. An early walk-off and an evening flight is a proper South Florida day — hours at the beach, time in Hollywood, or somewhere else in Broward County entirely. Watch the 2pm weekend cutoff if it's a Saturday or Sunday.

Whatever the window, leave enough room at the end that the last day of your holiday isn't a race.

We can't meet you at the terminal

Port Everglades is a controlled-access seaport with its own commercial operating and security requirements. We're not an on-port rental counter and we can't have a car waiting outside the gangway.

What we can do is meet you nearby. Cruise passengers generally either take delivery at a hotel or other approved address in one of our six cities, or ride the short distance from the port to our FLL pickup point and collect it there.

Either way, settle the arrangement before cruise day.

The FLL pickup, and the QR code you need

Our airport pickup point is at 100 Fronton Blvd, Dania Beach, FL 33004. Short ride from the port, no airport pickup fee, shuttle running 24/7.

One thing will strand you if you skip it:

You have to request the shuttle, and you need the QR code. Outside the terminal with your bags, request it at trackmyshuttle.com/3824 and have the QR code we email you ready to show the driver. They can't board you without it. Save it to your phone before you sail, while you still have signal you aren't paying by the megabyte for.

Wait at the Park By The Ports pickup point for your terminal — between Terminals 1 and 2 at column E, or between Terminals 3 and 4 at column F — and watch for the orange van. Short ride to Fronton Blvd, where we'll be waiting with the car.

Book before you sail

Earlier than you'd think, and not for the usual reason.

We run a small fleet. When a car is out, there isn't a lot full of spares behind it. Meanwhile Port Everglades empties thousands of people into Fort Lauderdale inside a two-hour window, often with several ships turning around the same morning. That's a real demand spike on a completely predictable date.

Rough guidance:

A typical trip — one to three weeks ahead
A week or longer — three to four weeks
A holiday or peak week — four to six weeks
You need the SUV specifically, or you have a tight window — as soon as your dates are firm

Earlier still if you need the car the moment you disembark, you're traveling with several people or a lot of luggage, or your cruise lands on a holiday weekend.

Disembarkation morning is the worst possible time to start looking, and you may be doing it on ship wi-fi. Same-day is sometimes possible, but availability, verification and our business hours all have to line up at once. How far in advance to book has the full picture.

What time to put on the booking

Not the ship's advertised arrival time.

Between docking and driving there's the announcement, the walk off, the luggage, the terminal, and the trip to the meeting point. Passengers typically debark between 7 and 9AM and our day starts at 8am, so for most people a mid-morning handover is the realistic one.

Give yourself margin instead of building a plan that only works if you're first off the ship. Ready sooner than expected? Message us and we'll see whether an earlier handoff is possible.

If the ship comes in late

Cruise schedules move for weather, port traffic and operational reasons. If yours does:

Tell us as soon as you know.
Don't assume the handover time shifts by itself.
Wait for the new time to be confirmed.
Keep your phone to hand once you're back in cellular range.

We're coordinating deliveries, returns, vehicle prep and other reservations across the same day, so early notice is what gives us room to move. And if the trip falls apart entirely, cancelling 24 hours or more before your start time is a full refund.

Getting back to FLL

Plan to be at the Park My Share lot at least two hours before you want to be at your terminal.

Return the car to the same section, take everything out, confirm fuel and mileage, finish the return, then wait under the white shaded structure for the shuttle back to the airport.

Don't work backwards from the distance between the lot and FLL. Allow for the return itself, the shuttle wait, airport traffic, security and your airline's cutoffs. On a Saturday or Sunday, remember we close at 2pm.

Tolls

A post-cruise drive may put you on toll roads. Every Atlas car has a SunPass transponder, and you pay the toll — nothing on top. No package to buy, no daily fee, no administrative markup.

Sort the paperwork before you board

Requirements are the same as any other rental: a valid license (drivers must be at least 23), a payment card in the renter's own name, and either verifiable personal auto insurance or our renter liability coverage. Optional damage waivers are separate.

Do all of it before you sail.

Verification is online and it isn't instant — a blurry license photo can add an hour. Doing it from the middle of the Caribbean on paid ship wi-fi, or in the twenty minutes between the gangway and the shuttle, is exactly how a rental starts late. Do it at home and it costs you nothing.

Also worth having ready: your cruise schedule, where you're staying afterwards, your flight details, and the information for any additional driver. What documents you need is the checklist, and renting without personal insurance covers the coverage options.

At the port

Port Everglades is a secured seaport, not an ordinary parking lot. Everyone aged 18 and older needs a government-issued photo ID at the security checkpoint.

Embarking: follow the cruise line's assigned check-in time, have your documents and ID out, attach the baggage tags before you arrive, and allow time for the checkpoint.

Disembarking: wait for the announcement, expect most passengers off between 7 and 9AM, remember the two-hour baggage rule at FLL, and keep your plans flexible.

Rates start at $49.00 a day, with 200 miles a day included and $0.35 for each additional mile. A $300.00 refundable deposit is held and released after you bring the car back, and cancelling 24 hours or more before your start time is a full refund.
